The Story of Amazon
Who doesn’t love a good start-up story and what better than one about one of the arguably richest men in the world?!
Jeff Bezos, the story much like others in his garage where he began developing software, this then progressed into a 2 bedroom house equipped with a Sun Microstation and eventually a test site. Bezos then invited 300 friends to beta test the website and decided to name the business Amazon after the South American river on July 16, 1995.
Amazon began its success selling books online, across America and in 45 other countries within 30 days. In a matter of two months sales reached to $20,000 a week, growing faster than Bezos had even imagined. In 1997 the company went public and two years later proved to only go from strength to strength and not only keeping up with other traditional retailers e-commerce sites but becoming a market leader.
Bezos went into diversifying Amazon product range and began selling CD’s and videos in 1998, and then later clothes, electronics, toys, and more through major retail partnerships. In 2006 Amazon.com began offering a video service and initially rebranded as Amazon Instant Video. In 2007 Kindle was released, in that same year Bezos announced his investment in Blue Origin an aerospace company that develops technologies to offer space travel to paying customers.
In 2011 Bezos continued to diversify and directed Amazon into the tablet market with the Kindle Fire Tablet. Then came the Kind Fire HD which gave Apples iPad a run for its money. In 2013 Bezos made headlines when he purchased the Huffington Post $250 million. In 2013 Bezos revealed a new initiative Amazon had been working on called Amazon Prime Air using drones – remote controlled machines that perform human tasks that could in turn function as part of a delivery service to customers.
After many different missteps through the next few years including a failed mobile phone, Bezos was successful with the development of original content through Amazon studios. They were successful with 2 movies and ‘Chi-Raq’ a movie directed by Spike Lee, the companies first feature film.
In July 2017 Bezos surpassed Microsoft founder Bill Gates to become the richest person in the world at a net worth of $90.9 billion but by the end of the market closing Bill Gates net worth was $90 billion and Bezos had dropped to $89 billion…that’s a lot of dollars!

With almost every house and office and also business having at least one printer, what is it that happens to all of your used cartridges? Well available to you are enough recycling stations around that recycling them is not the issue it once was.
Where should we start recycling?
You are probably asking what are we going to do with all of our used cartridges lying around the home or office? This is a very common question and we always encourage recycling rather than binning!
So below we have compiled some information and statistics about printer cartridges and also the many places you can take our old cartridges to recycle and do your bit for the environment. We are not all greenies, granted however it seems to just make sense that recycling items that can be recycled should be common practice there are both economical and environmental benefits to be had! Honestly speaking how hard is it really to take your cartridges to a recycle depot instead of just binning them?!

Printer Cartridges and computer hardware equipment are fast becoming one of the biggest contributors to landfill. Simply recycling our used cartridges and disposing of them responsibly via a recycle depot helps to reduce the landfill significantly.
How can you help?
There are a number of ways we can all contribute to reducing landfill that is directly correlated to cartridge disposal. The top solution is to start using re-manufactured toners and ink jet cartridges, or using generic cartridges that have been produced from recycled waste products.
One of the main reasons this would assist in reducing landfill is that by using re-manufactured cartridges you are cutting the landfill rate by 50% immediately. This is because the cartridge is essentially being used twice instead of once! Non genuine cartridges are also not in a high tech, overdone packaging with gold bands, glossy cardboard, which also helps to reduce the amount of waste. So next time you are about to throw your old printer cartridge in the bin remember that cartridge can potentially take up to 1,000 years to break down, so please take it to your local recycle depot and help towards saving the preservation of our planet.

Setting your printer to Black and White
This is obviously something that is very commonly discussed and yes there is an easy way in Windows to default your printing to black and white. Some inkjet printer will still utilise some colour where needed as the print heads need to be kept clean and free of ink build up. If the printer didn’t perform this maintenance when you do print colour you will find white lines appearing throughout the document. .
Epson printers do not take well to this method as their printer heads have the tendency to clogg even when used in full colour mode. Defaulting to Black and white could potentially cause major issues with the print head.
Canon and Brothers printers are on the other hand usually not as likely to encounter these issues as much. If you are happy to default your printer to black and white follow the steps below:
For computers with WINDOWS Operating System:
- From your computer, select Start>Settings>Printers and Faxes
- Right-click the name of your printer
- Select Printing Preferences
- Select the Advanced tab, then under the Colour printing section, select Print Colours as Black and White
- Click OK
This is a great way to always print in black and white without having to manually change your settings every time, however it is advisable to change your setting back to colour every fortnight or so and print one page of colour. Routinely doing so will allow you to keep your printer head clean and inhibit any clogging with ink that has been sitting idle in the colour print nozzle for long

The official story of: Nike
Most people have heard of Phil Knight a middle distance runner who turned selling shoes out of his car into a footwear empire. The business started as a small distribution base selling shoes out of the back of his car alongside Bill Bowerman. They were both athletes who had a natural born love for sport, in fact Bill became the coach at the University of Oregon and that is how they met.
Whilst Knight competed in Bowerman’s track and field team they became great friends with a great common interest: sport. On the side Bowerman was experimenting with shoe creation at home trying to design the perfect running shoe.
Knight completed his business degree at Uiversity and attended graduate school in California at Stanford University. In 1962 he received his Master Degree in Business, and shortly after rewarded himself with a trip to Japan where he discovered Oniksuka Tiger shoes. Knight found they were built with a very high level of quality and immediately ordered a large shipment and began his business at the time called Blue Ribbon Sports.
After both reconvening back in the states they decided to form a partnership at Blue Ribbon and contributed $500 of their own money into the business and towards their dream of creating the perfect running shoe. Bowerman continued his coaching job and served as the designer man of Blue Ribbon, whilst Knight handled the business side of the company.
In 1971 after the immediate success of their shoe the ‘Cortez’ (still a popular seller today) the company had already made $800,000 in that year. They began their focus of creating shoes and in 1972 renamed the company Nike. By 1984 the company sales has hit in excess of $920 million dollars they hired Michael Jordan as their ambassador ad introduced the ‘Just do it’ campaign which is still their slogan today. Then as they say the rest is history.

Mark Cuban Where it all began
We often hear about the huge success of entrepreneurs and businesses, but how did these success stories begin? Below is some insight into how Mark Cuban got his small software business off the ground and created a billion dollar empire, and it all started at humble beginnings.
I'd been in Indiana for a few months, working at a place called Tronics 2000. Before that, I'd been in Pittsburgh, my hometown, where I joined Mellon Bank after graduating from Indiana University in 1980 at 22. Back then a lot of smaller regional banks still did everything on paper.
Mellon had a department that went in and converted them to computerized systems. That's what I did. A lot of my peers at Mellon were just happy to have a job. I wanted to be more entrepreneurial. I took the initiative.
I initially got a job as a bartender at a place called Elan, which was a hot Dallas club. But bartending wasn't my end goal. I wanted to start my own business.
While tending bar, I applied for jobs. I got an interview with a company called Your Business Software. They sold PC software to businesses and consumers. I'd just bought a $99 Texas Instruments computer and was teaching myself programming. They were impressed by that. They were also impressed by the fact that I was actually willing to read all of the software manuals. I got the job. It paid me $18,000 a year, plus commission.
I was happy. I was selling, making money. More importantly, I was learning about the PC and software industry and building a client base. About nine months in, I got an opportunity to make a $15,000 sale to a guy named Kevin. I was going to make a $1,500 commission, which was enormous. It would have allowed me to move out of the apartment and maybe have a bed.
I asked a co-worker to cover me at the office. I called my boss, the CEO, whose name was Michael, and told him I was going to pick up the check. I thought he'd be thrilled. He wasn't. He told me not to do it. I thought: "Are you kidding me?" I decided to do it anyway. I thought when I showed up with a $15,000 check, he'd be cool with it.
Instead, when I came back to the office, he fired me on the spot. I had disobeyed him. He was one of those CEOs who is all pomp and circumstance, one of those guys who seems to scream: "Don't you know who I am? What I do?" He tried hard to look and act the part of the CEO. He wore the right suits. But he had a huge flaw: He never did the work. He never demonstrated the initiative to go out to sell. I had realized by that time that "sales cures all." That's a phrase I still use to this day. He was my mentor, but not in the way you'd expect. Even now I think back to things he did, and I do the opposite. And he made me superstitious about titles. I'm never listed as the CEO of my companies. There is no CEO. I am the president.
But being fired from that job was the determining factor in my business life. I decided then and there to start my own company. I didn't have that much to lose, and it was something that I knew I had to do. I was 25. I went back to that guy with the $15,000 job and told him that I didn't have the money at the time, but if he let me keep this job and the money, I would do the work and it would help me start my own company. He said, "Sure."
I started a company called Micro-Solutions. I was a PC consultant, and I sold software and did training and configured computers. I wrote my own programs. I immersed myself in the PC industry and studied Microsoft and Lotus and watched what the smartest people did to make things work. I remember one day I had to drive to Austin for some PC part, to a place called PCs Limited. The place was run by this kid who was younger than I was. We sat down and talked for a few hours. I was really impressed by him. I remember telling him, "Dude, I think we're both going places." That "dude" was Michael Dell.
That year I made the decision to get MicroSolutions into local-area networks. We hooked up PCs at small to medium-size businesses so workers could share information. We were one of the first to do that. We resold products from TeleVideo and Novell. This was literally the foundation of my later career. MicroSolutions grew into a company with $30 million in revenues. I sold it a few years later to CompuServe. That start enabled me to found AudioNet, which became Broadcast.com, which my partner, Todd Wagner, and I sold to Yahoo. Then came the Dallas Mavericks and everything else, of course.
